ATS CV PRO TIPS

1. USE STANDARD HEADINGS
ATS systems scan for common section titles. Use simple, readable headings such as:
“WORK EXPERIENCE,” “EDUCATION,” “SKILLS,” “CERTIFICATIONS,” “PROJECTS.”

2. INCLUDE KEYWORDS FROM THE JOB POST
Carefully read the vacancy and repeat keywords naturally in your CV. ATS systems match keywords like:

  • Administration

  • Record Management

  • Data Capturing

  • Customer Service

  • Public Service Regulations

  • Clerical Support

3. AVOID TABLES, TEXT BOXES, AND GRAPHICS
ATS struggles to read complex layouts. Keep your CV clean, simple, and text-based.

4. USE A STANDARD FONT
ATS-friendly fonts include:
Arial, Calibri, Times New Roman, Helvetica.
Font size 10–12 works best.

5. SAVE AND SUBMIT AS PDF (UNLESS INSTRUCTED OTHERWISE)
Most ATS scanners read PDF correctly. However, if the job ad specifically says WORD DOCUMENT ONLY, follow the instructions.

6. KEEP BULLET POINTS SHORT AND POWERFUL
Start each bullet with an action verb:
Coordinated, Captured, Prepared, Assisted, Managed, Processed, Implemented.

7. AVOID IMAGES, LOGOS, OR FANCY DESIGNS
These confuse ATS scanners and may cause information to be skipped.

8. USE CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER
List your experience from most recent to oldest. ATS prefers a linear structure.

9. SPELL OUT ACRONYMS FIRST TIME
Example:
DEPARTMENT OF DEFENCE (DOD)
After that, you can use the acronym.

10. MATCH JOB TITLES WHEN POSSIBLE
If your role was similar, use the closest matching job title without lying.
Example:
“ADMIN CLERK (DUTIES ALIGNED WITH PUBLIC SERVICE ADMINISTRATION FUNCTIONS)”

11. CHECK FOR SPELLING & FORMATTING ERRORS
ATS can misread words if there are spelling mistakes. Use tools or proofreading.

12. KEEP YOUR CV BETWEEN 1–3 PAGES
ATS is not about length—it’s about keyword accuracy and clarity.
